The field of Cosmetic Surgery began when Narcissus saw his reflection in nature’s mirror. Since then man has been obsessed with changing his appearance either by adornment or physical alteration. (please post pg 8&10 from book next to this text).
In modern western culture the civilized method of physical alteration is cosmetic surgery. Since childhood, all of us have been programmed to the mirror (example: Snow White). The mirror has a tremendous impact on man. All of us have daily interactions with mirrors. This sends us an early message about the perception of beauty.
Perception is reality and the perception of beauty varies from person to person, culture to culture, and with time. Perceived beauty creates comfort, self-confidence, and self-esteem. The emphasis on appearance in our culture has created a multi-billion dollar industry. This is driven by the media, performing arts, and the fashion industry; including clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, and variety of solutions for eternal youth. The historic quest for the Fountain of Youth is universal.
