As we age, by nature, our skin loses its tight attachment to the underlying structures; therefore, losing its elasticity. When a patient has a large amount of excess skin under the neck and prominent jowl area, that patient is an ideal candidate for a lower facelift. A lower facelift rejuvenates the bottom third of the face, by tightening the face’s underlying structures that have “weakened” with age.
The lower facelift procedure improves the excess skin in the cheeks, jowls, nasolabial folds, and gives an overall better facial contour, as well as tightening of the muscle bands in the neck. This procedure moves the skin of the lower face up and back. Some patients are ideal candidates for excess fat removal during this procedure.
This procedure is performed on an out-patient basis and can be performed with a local anesthesia. The incision is directly in front of the ear and continues down and behind the ear; therefore placing it in a natural crease for camouflage. Patients can resume all normal activity the very next day after surgery. Patients may expect postoperative, minor bruising and swelling, but most importantly there is no hair loss. The minor bruising and swelling is temporary and only lasts for a short period of time. All sutures are removed in one week.
