Some of the conditions that podiatrists see are hammer toe deformities that can be induced from wearing certain types of footwear that maybe very stylish, but not very healthy for the feet. These conditions are corrected by podiatrists at Newport Beach Center for Surgery, under a regional type of anesthesia, through minimal incisions that are very inconspicuous and the hammer toe deformity is then eliminated by repositioning the bone of the toes by restructuring the joints of the toes. These conditions, in addition to being unattractive, are very often painful and prevent using stylish footwear. After the surgery, the patients are taken to recovery for a short period of time, and then discharged to a responsible caretaker. For a variable time after the surgery, the patients are required to wear certain type of footwear that promote healing and retain the toes in a straight position.
Bunions are a very common condition. The photograph shows a typical bunion deformity with severe angulations of the great toe and protrusion of the joint at the base of the great toe. Through relatively safe, simple surgical procedures, the joint is opened and re-structured at times by reconstructing the joint of the great toe and realigning the toe so as to eliminate the protruding joint and the angular deformity of the great toe. On completion of this procedure the toe is straight and the patient is given a special shoe to wear to maintain the toe in its revised position. The patient remains in recovery for a relatively short period of time and is then discharged to a responsible adult. The patient is followed very closely by the podiatrists to ensure that the toe heals in the proper manner. Certain types of special footwear is required for a variable period of time. Sometimes several weeks to ensure that the surgery is successful.
A variety of congenital conditions can also be very distressful to patients, one of them is a condition called sindectilly, where there is a webbing of the toes, rather than a complete delineation of the entire length of the toe. (insert pg. 180 of book). This condition is improved through a very safe, minor surgical procedure, which eliminates the webbing of the two toes to resume the entire, normal length and function of the toes. Once again, these patients are done on an out-patient basis at Newport Beach Center for Surgery. After a short recovery period, the patient is discharged to the care of a responsible adult. Post operatively, special footwear is used to ensure proper healing and alignment of the toes with complete elimination of the webbed toe deformity.
Another condition that is very often seen in young children is the short toes syndrome. These conditions are extremely embarrassing to children and as a result the children refrain from engaging in normal childhood activities, for fear of being ridiculed by other children. One of the podiatrists at Newport Beach Center for Surgery designed a procedure where a portion of bone is taken from another part of the foot and is used for lengthening purposes of the short toe syndrome. The condition responds extremely well to this bone grafting procedure. After surgery, special footwear is used, patients are transferred to recovery for a short period of time, and discharged to the care of a responsible adult. The photographs demonstrate the significant improvement of this condition and it can be well imagined that these children have a tremendous psychological burden removed and then can resume all of their normal childhood activities, without the fear of being ridiculed. These procedures are extremely successful and permanent in nature.
