Your nasal septum is the wall or partition that runs down the center of your nose, separating the two nasal cavities. This septum could be deviated from its original position at birth or due to injury, hindering proper breathing, increasing the risk of infection or nosebleeds and this requires corrective surgery.

What Is Septoplasty?

A Septoplasty otherwise called a ‘Submucous Septal Resection is a procedure that is done to straighten a deviated nasal septum and realign back to the middle. Dr. Brennan is the best person in Orange County and Newport Beach, CA to get your nasal septum back in place and he makes sure you understand exactly what will happen and how it’ll help you.

Why Get A Septoplasty?

For most people, the main reason for getting a septoplasty is to correct a deviation of the nasal septum that may be restricting the airflow and making breathing difficult due to its crookedness.

However, a septoplasty could be gotten for many other reasons at your discretion plus that of your doctor. Some of these reasons may be;

Cosmetic Reasons

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Some people experience a lack of self-confidence due to the appearance of their nose. Nobody likes to look different from others and sometimes you may have a deviated septum from birth that affects the way you look. A Septoplasty Specialist like Dr. Brennan who prides himself in his knowledge and artistry will sit with you and listen to your concerns. If you would like to bring some photos to show the doctor your dream nose that is always very helpful as well. Nothing is more important to Dr. Brennan than having happy, healthy patients. Restoring a patient’s confidence is his number one goal.

Also, if you’ve had cosmetic surgery done on your nose before, you may experience nasal obstruction as a side effect and in extreme cases, you may need a revision septoplasty to make sure the deviation is corrected.

Trauma

Sometimes trauma to the face and nasal area could lead to a shift or dislocation of the nasal septum especially around the region of the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone or quadrangle cartilage. If the dislocation isn’t addressed quickly after trauma, it may become permanent and require septoplasty.

Enlarged Turbinates

Enlarged Turbinates may also cause Nasal Obstruction. Turbinates are structures on the sidewalls of the nose that extend from there into the nasal cavity as ridges of tissue that keep the air flowing through nice and warm.

These structures have both bony and soft tissue parts so either part, especially the inferior turbinates could become overly enlarged and restrict proper airflow. This condition is easily corrected, but it must be performed very conservatively.

Other Reasons

Other causes of Nasal Obstruction may be associated with allergies that cause intermittent swelling of the lining of the nose that can make it difficult to breathe normally.

What To Do Before Getting a Septoplasty

Before a septoplasty procedure is performed, experts like Dr. Brennan ensure that you’re in optimal condition for the surgery and that you understand the risks and benefits associated with the procedure.

Physical Exams

You’ll get a full physical exam and any necessary tests will be done. This helps the doctor know the best approach to take after a thorough inspection.

Medical History

Your medical history will be taken to determine any past medical conditions or diseases, medication history and anything relevant to your condition and the procedure.

Photographs

To ensure there’s a reference before and after the surgery, pictures of your nose from different angles are taken.

Precautions

You’ll be asked to avoid some specific medications, like Aspirin and NSAIDs for some time before and after the surgery. This reduces the risk of excessive bleeding. You will also be asked to stop habits like smoking as it increases the risk of complications during and after surgery, and also slows down the healing process.

If the surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, meaning you’ll be put to sleep during the procedure, you’re advised not to eat or drink anything for at least 10-12 hours before to prevent complications like choking if you react with nausea to the anesthesia which would be extremely rare.

Expectations

Here, Dr. Brennan determines your expectations from the procedure, explains what’s going to happen and what it achieves for you.

What To Expect After Septoplasty

A Septoplasty is a procedure usually performed on an outpatient basis which means you are allowed to go home after the procedure and the anaesthesia has worn off. Dr. Brennan designed a system which eliminates the need  for inter nasal packing and you should be able to breathe normally the morning after surgery. You can resume HADS, H- normal hygiene, A – non-strenuous activity, D – normal diet, S – normal sleep. The most you will need for discomfort is Extra Strength Tylenol and you must refrain from participating in any contact sport for 2 weeks.

To increase your chances of healing quickly, you should:

  • Elevate your head slightly at night to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid blowing your nose forcefully for a few days after surgery to avoid damaging fragile blood vessels
  • Avoid clothing that you have to pull over your head or touch your nose before wearing.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
  • Avoid people who smoke or may have cold or coughs that increase your risk of infection or sickness.

The day of surgery, you need to restrict your physical activities. The anesthesia or sedation will wear off in a  few hours. You may then use your cell phone, watch television, have a light supper and have a good night sleep. Your nose may be stuffy because of the swelling after the surgery and you will be instructed to use some over the counter nose drops to relieve the stuffiness. You may also experience some discomfort which is usually very minor and can be controlled by using Extra Strength Tylenol.

You will not need any strong painkillers which could be potentially addictive. This should speak volumes as to how safe and simple Septoplasty Surgery is. It usually is a very short recovery and recuperation.

Dr. Brennan will call you the evening of surgery to check on you and answer any questions you might have regarding your Septoplasty. He will also set up a follow up appointment for the next morning and he will be available at all times on his cell phone. You will have the piece of mind knowing that he is always a phone call away.

The morning after surgery, you will be seen for your first Septoplasty office visit. You may require some nasal hygiene and use of some nose drops that will reduce the swelling and allow you to breathe through your nose the morning after your Septoplasty procedure.

Are There Any Risks Associated With Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a very low-risk procedure, and with the right doctor, you have very little to worry about. As is true with any procedure, there are always potential risks, but especially with Septoplasty these are extremely rare and almost never occur. You should be able to resume all your normal non-strenuous physical activities including driving a vehicle. You might experience some periodic swelling causing nasal stuffiness which is easily treated using an over the counter nose drop that shrinks the lining inside your nose and opens the airway so you can breathe comfortably.

You will be given what is called informed consent which lists several rare conditions. But in reality, they almost never occur.

As always Dr. Brennan is available 24-7 to answer any question you might have which his patients find very comforting. You can look forward to a very safe, simple, predictably successful surgical procedure that will work wonders in reducing your nasal obstruction.

If you’ve been considering getting a septoplasty or any other cosmetic procedure done, now is the right time to take that first step and ensure you’re getting the very best treatment. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Brennan, call the office today at 949-644-1641.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does septoplasty take?

Septoplasty usually takes about 1 to 2 hours. However, the exact time will depend on the complexity of the surgery.

What is septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical treatment for a deviated septum, which is a displacement of the bone and cartilage that separates the nasal cavity into two halves. The septum is the wall between the nostrils. If it is displaced, it can cause problems with breathing, sinus infections, headaches, and other symptoms.

What is the purpose of septoplasty?

The purpose of septoplasty is to improve the function of the nose and relieve symptoms caused by a deviated septum. It can also improve the appearance of the nose.

Who is a candidate for septoplasty?

A septoplasty may be right for you if you have a deviated septum that is causing:

  • difficulty breathing through your nose
  • facial pain or pressure
  • headaches
  • sleep apnea
  • snoring
What are the risks and complications associated with septoplasty?

As with any surgery, there are risks and complications associated with septoplasty. These include:

  • scarring
  • septal perforation (hole in the septum)
  • difficulty breathing through the nose
  • persistent pain or discomfort
How is septoplasty performed?

Septoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgery takes about 1-2 hours. During the procedure, the surgeon will make small incisions in the nose and then correct the deviated septum by removing cartilage and bone. The incision is then closed with sutures.

What is the recovery time for septoplasty?

Most people take about a week to recover from septoplasty. During this time, it is important to rest and avoid strenuous activity. You may also have some congestion, bruising, and swelling around the incisions. These side effects should resolve within a few weeks.

What are the long-term effects of septoplasty?

Septoplasty can improve breathing and reduce symptoms of sinusitis. In some cases, the results are permanent. In other cases, the septum may eventually become deviated again and additional surgery may be necessary.

What are the risks and complications associated with septoplasty in adults?

Risks and complications associated with septoplasty include infection, bleeding, reactivation of the rhinitis, and recurrence of the blockage or deformity. In some cases, the surgeon may inadvertently damage the turbinate, which can lead to a condition called empty nose syndrome. This is a serious condition that can cause difficulty breathing and a loss of sense of smell.
